Race support

With the popularity of multi-stage mountain bike races fast gaining ground, so has the need for skilled, resourceful mechanics to offer race support along the route. The nature of these races makes it hard on the cyclist and bicycle and daily maintenance and cleaning is a necessity, not a luxury.

But the last thing an exhausted rider wants to do after a stage is clean, lubricate and repair bicycles. Yellow Saddle Race Support does all that and more. Contract us as your support team and leave the hard work to us.

You get your legs up and some food down or just enjoy race-camp life. We’ll collect your bicycle from you, clean it, lubricate it, do the repairs, adjust brakes and gears and make sure it is race-ready for you first thing next morning.

The Team

The Yellow Saddle Race Support team is headed up by Johan Bornman, specialist mechanic, trainer, wheelbuilder and cycling guru. He assembles and accompanies a team of competent mechanics and assistants for all the major stage races. The team can take on a maximum of 15 racers, ensuring ample attention to detail and leaving ample time for solving tough problems.

They are equipped with all the stands, kit and tools necessary for keeping bicycles clean, serviceable and making them a pleasure to ride.

Pre-Race Inspection

Prior to each race, Johan will recommend pre-race work to be done to the bicycles and take note of any special wear components each bicycle may require during the race. He’ll bring along a stock of consumables, ensuring there’s no shortage of brake pads, cables, sprockets, chains or shock seals during the event. He’s ready for any eventuality short of complete frame failure, up to and including a complete wheel rebuild.

Errands

In addition to looking after your bicycle, we’ll also look after you by running small errands during the day. Charging your cellphone, finding your favourite breakfast oats or that special ointment, sending a fax, downloading your Polar data, whatever you need within reason.

Should you have to retire from the race for whatever reason, we’ll ensure your bicycle reaches the end destination safely. That’s better than having it piled on a truck, isn’t it?

 How much does it cost?

Competing in a stage race is not cheap. In addition to the hefty entry fee, you have to take into account lost income (if you are self-employed), travelling, training camps, broken equipment, that new bicycle, that special recovery drink and those long cellphone calls back home each evening. Perform poorly because of equipment problems and it is all wasted. That’s why you will agree that R150 per day, per team member, plus a small travel and accommodation allowance, is worth it.

How do I secure the Yellow Saddle Race Support Team for my next race?
